PVG Checks for Care Homes

What is the PVG Scheme?

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme helps ensure that people who are unsuitable to work with protected groups such as vulnerable adults cannot do so.

PVG checks from a Previous Employer

You should be aware that an employee’s or potential employee’s PVG certificate from another employer will not give your Care Home up to date disclosure information. This means your Care Home will not be notified about any consideration for listing, a barring from working with vulnerable groups, or any new vetting information added. Without directly linking the Care Home to an employee’s PVG Scheme membership, your business will not receive ongoing notifications about the employee’s suitability to work with vulnerable groups.

The Care Inspectorate

Care Homes are registered and regulated by the Care Inspectorate, who wish to be assured that they can be:

• Satisfied about the fitness of Care Home providers and managers of registered services.
• Ensure that providers of Care Home services implement the PVG Scheme appropriately as part of the safe recruitment of the managers and staff of care homes

PVG Checks and PVG Updates carried out on employees and potential employees will satisfy the Care Inspectorate in these regards.

Which Care Home roles are eligible for PVG Scheme Checks?

• Staff working in the roles of Care Assistant, Care Support Workers, Nurse, Cook, Cleaner and Care Home Manager.
• Positions who have direct line management responsibility of the above positions are also eligible for PVG Checks.
